The Four Desires: Creating a Life of Purpose, Happiness, Prosperity, and Freedom.
"Human beings come to this world to do particular work. That work is the purpose, and each is specific to the person." -Rumi
Perhaps the most vital principle of the yoga tradition is the concept of Dharma (order, duty, path, intelligence, purpose). Honoring it is so essential to our longing for happiness, fulfillment and meaning that it can said of Dharma: "your live consistent with Dharma, you will thrive, fulfill your destiny––you will be happy; if you don't, you won't.
Thus, the purpose of yoga could be summed up as: still your mind, so you can elevate your discernment and fulfill your unique dharma moment to moment. This is the key to finding real meaning, living with purpose and sustainable happiness.Â
Uncovering your unique dharma is the basis of The Four Desires, Rod’s best-selling book and the process of this course––a yoga course unlike any other. In it, Rod guides you through the process he developed, based on the teachings of the yoga tradition and other self-inquiry practices he developed. About Rod
When I first met with Random House, in the mid '90s, about publishing The Four Desires I was asked, "why this subject matter, you're known as a yoga teacher?" My response was that there was a critical element missing in the way yoga was being taught and practiced. Meanwhile, I wanted anyone interested in living a more fulfilled life, whether they practiced or not, to benefit from the wisdom of the yoga tradition.
Nearly 20 years earlier, I had read the Bhagavad Gita and was profoundly moved to learn that yoga was more about the way we lived than esoteric practices or transcendence.
The text gave me a name, Dharma, for something that I'd felt from my earliest days: there was an intelligence that pervaded the natural world. I always sensed that if I could know it, be aligned with it, my life would be better––I would naturally become the fullest and most authentic version of myself. This quest was yoga. This was what I set upon developing an approach to living our individual Dharma, rooted in the ancient wisdom, that would become the book and the process, “The Four Desires.”

Kind Words
“Phenomenal…”
“This is a phenomenal training. Deep and important life enhancing work. What a gift to take the time to dive into this subject matter with gracious and wise guidance. Then to emerge on the other side with more clarity and action steps forward to guide me in the direction of my soul's purpose. I highly recommend this journey and am excited to continue!”
Dan
“True Gold...”
“I read The Four Desires years ago and found it really interesting right away. But it was only after the course that I've actually understood the true power of this process. Even the nature of the process is a big lesson by itself, meaning that you have to work and dig deep and then some more to get to your authentic Dharma Code, sankalpa and vikalpa. And that itself is a big deal.is where the true gold is!”
Lisa
“A Gift...”
“Every day we are asked to make a million decisions. This can be very tricky for my personality of indecision and paradoxical thinking. Writing my dharma code has allowed me to make decisions based on my internal knowing and authentic self. This simple 5-line code allows me so much freedom in my life by knowing my boundaries and what to say yes and no to. It is truly a gift.."
